Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Cape Coast, George Justice Arthur, has visited the University of Cape Coast (UCC) to commiserate with the university following the tragic death of a Level 200 Bachelor of Commerce (Human Resource) student, Innocentia Atsufui Avinu.
Mr. Arthur was received by the Registrar, Gideon Enoch Abbeyquaye, Esq. at the Council Chamber to gether the the Ag. Director of Finance, Mr. George Amfo Antiri, the Director of Consular and General Services, Dr. Mary Obimpeh, the Director of Academic Affairs, Dr. Atta Yeboah Sarpong, as well as the Heads of Public Relations and Protocol, Mr. Felix Adu-Poku and Mr. Umar Farouk, respectively.
Ms. Avinu was discovered dead after earlier reports that she had been missing. In response, the Ghana Police Service has launched a wider effort to enhance coordination and deepen the investigative process surrounding her death. Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has also assigned a dedicated unit of seasoned detectives and intelligence personnel to the Central Region to bolster existing police operations and assist with further inquiries.
On Monday, June 16, 2026, the Ghana Police Service announced the arrest of a 39-year-old suspect in connection with the death.
Mr. Arthur, who is also the Head of the Metropolitan Security Council (MUSEC), expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the student and extended condolences to the family, staff, and students of the University.
He also received some briefing on the tragic incident from the Head of the UCC Security Section, Col. Joseph K. Baah Tsiquaye.
For his part, the Registrar of UCC, Mr. Gideon Enoch Abbeyquaye, expressed gratitude to the MCE for personally condoling with the members of the university, offering words of comfort and assurance of continued support.
