The newly appointed Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Cong Song, has paid a working visit to the Confucius Institute (CI) at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) as part of his familiarisation tour.
According to the ambassador, his visit was to learn first-hand about the operations of the CI-UCC.
“My visit today is to familiarise myself with the activities of the CI-UCC and offer my support and advice where necessary.”
He praised UCC, through the Faculty of Arts, for helping the Confucius Institute to achieve its aim of promoting the study of the Chinese language and culture.
HE Song expressed the hope that students would continue to deepen their understanding of Chinese culture and be inspired to pursue careers in Chinese firms to contribute to the country’s development.
The Ambassador praised the contestants from CI-UCC who participated in the 2025 Chinese Bridge competition designed to promote Chinese language learning among Ghanaian youth and children.
For his part, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Prof. Kwabena Sarfo Sarfo-Kantankah, thanked the ambassador for the visit and congratulated him on his appointment.
He expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for its continuous support in promoting Chinese language education in Ghana.
Prof. Sarfo-Kantankah underlined the value of language as a cultural tool, stating: “Language reflects identity and heritage. By learning Chinese, we embrace knowledge that enhances Ghana-China relations.”
Also present was the Director of the Confucius Institute, Ghana, Professor Amo Ofori, who reiterated that the Institute was not merely a language centre, but a cultural bridge connecting Ghana and China.
For her part, the China Director of Confucius Institute, Prof. Zang Yonghong, expressed gratitude to the Chinese Embassy in Ghana and all stakeholders for their strong support in advancing Chinese language education.
She praised students reading Chinese in Ghana, especially at UCC, for being ambassadors of cross-cultural learning and encouraged them to continue exploring the opportunities language learning presents.
