Newly elected student leaders of the University of Cape Coast have been sworn in, marking the commencement of their one-year term in office.
Executives of the Student Representative Council (SRC), the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG), and the Local chapter of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) took the oath of office, administered by a former Acting Registrar of the University, Mr. Ebenezer Aggrey. He represented the Registrar, Gideon Enoch Abbeyquaye, Esq.
The newly elected SRC officers include Emmanuel Acheampong Nana Adjei, President; Regina Yayra Adenyo, Vice President; Benedicta Tiwaa Danso, General Secretary; Nuhu Dauda, Treasurer; Adwoa Asima Agbehiam, Coordinating Secretary; and Elisha Kojo Mensah, Public Relations Officer. The others are Emmanuel Essel, General Sports; and Christabel Adjokatcher, Women’s Commissioner.
For GRASAG, Abdullah Muniru was inducted as President; Sandra Awolousor as Vice-President; Juliana Serebour Quiacoe as Treasurer; Editha Kwakyewaa Boafo as Secretary; Patrick Ackah Arthur as Financial Secretary; Kelvin Baah as Organising Secretary; Maame Aba B. Essilfie, Women’s Commissioner; and Papa Ekow Orhin, Public Relations Officer.
Samuel Adjei Anderson was inducted as the Local NUGS President.
In a speech read on his behalf by the Provost of the College of Humanities and Legal Studies, Prof. Daniel Agyapong, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Denis Aheto, congratulated them on their election and inauguration.
He used the opportunity to acknowledge the past executives for their selfless service to the student body and cooperation with the management of the University.
“You have served as the collective voice of the student body, engaging constructively with university management on matters of critical importance to students' lives and the continued development of our institution.”
He particularly praised an intervention by the SRC to help address the long-standing accommodation deficit at the University.
“Your tenure has demonstrated commendable leadership in addressing student accommodation challenges by working closely with management and collaborating with SIC Life Insurance and private sector partners to explore sustainable solutions for expanding students' housing. Your bold initiative in cutting the sword for the construction of the SRC Hall Annex is a significant milestone that will stand as a lasting testament to your vision and commitment to improving the student experience,” he said.
Prof. Aheto said their leadership had contributed significantly to promoting campus security, enriching student life through impactful programmes and organising capacity-building workshops that had equipped many students with leadership, entrepreneurial, and personal development skills.
He added, “Through your constructive engagement and collaborative approach, you have also helped reinforce a culture of accountability and partnership with student leadership and university management.”
He said the tenure of the Past executives has demonstrated that when student leaders engage, embrace dialogue, collaboration, and a genuine desire to serve, they make meaningful and lasting contributions to the growth and progress of our university.
“While no administration can accomplish everything it sets out to do, every administration has the opportunity to leave the University better than it found it. I believe your tenure has done precisely that, and for this you deserve commendation,” the Acting Vice-Chancellor added.
Before handing over the mantle of leadership, the outgoing SRC and GRASAG Presidents, Kwame Ntim Ntiamoah and Gideon Quansah respectively, delivered comprehensive reports indicating the milestones achieved during their tenure.
The new SRC President, Emmanuel Acheampong Nana Adjei, and GRASAG President Abdullah Muniru thanked the students for the confidence reposed in them and said the privilege given them to serve would not be abused.
They pledged to work assiduously to promote the welfare of students in the University.
They also called for unity and collaboration among the student body and the University administration and assured to continue the projects of their predecessors, particularly the construction of the SRC Hall Annex.
