Non-Teaching Staff of Ucc Trained in Data Literacy and Reporting

The workshop, aimed at strengthening administrative efficiency and evidence-based decision-making, brought together staff from various units to deepen their understanding of data management, analysis, and reporting within the university environment.

Opening the programme, the Director of DRIC, Prof. David Teye Doku, emphasised the central role of data in modern institutional governance. He noted that accurate, timely, and well-analysed data are indispensable for effective planning and decision-making at all levels of the University.

“Data is everything. We need reliable data to provide accurate information and to make decisions in the best interest of the University,” he noted.

Prof. Doku also commended Dr. Alex Boadi-Dankyi for successfully securing the grant that made the training workshop possible, describing the initiative as timely and aligned with UCC’s commitment to innovation and accountability.

Providing an overview of the workshop, Dr. Boadi-Dankyi explained that the training was informed by a baseline study on data reporting and literacy among university administrators. He indicated that the long-term goal was to extend the training to a broader group of non-teaching staff to support the University’s mandate of excellence in teaching, research, and administration.

Topics treated on the first day focused on Ghana’s data governance and legal framework, data collection and coordination in the university setting, data quality and accuracy, error detection, as well as data analysis and interpretation. The second day covered data visualisation and communication, data management, storage and accessibility, data-driven decision-making, and the use of artificial intelligence to enhance reporting and administrative efficiency.

Participants are expected to leverage the knowledge gained to improve data handling practices across the University, thereby contributing to more informed decision-making and institutional development at UCC.

Other facilitators for the two-day training were Prof. Francis Annor, Prof. Elvis Ofori Ameyaw, Prof. Samuel Asiedu Owusu, Dr. Kwame Ofori, Dr. William Cantah, Dr. Akua Tiwaa Buabeng-Boateng, Ms. Linda Otoo and Mr. Isaac Nketsiah.
