Ghana Gas Donates Computers to R-Camat to Enhance Inclusive Education in Ucc

The Ghana National Gas Company, has donated 10 desktop computers and accessories to the Resource Centre for Alternative Media and Assistive Technology (R-CAMAT) at the University of Cape Coast to enhance digital access and learning for students with disabilities.

The donation forms part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy aimed at promoting inclusive education through assistive technology.

Presenting the items, the CSR Senior Officer and Disability Liaison Officer, MR. Isaac Ansah, noted that the initiative aligns with Ghana’s Inclusive Education Policy and broader efforts to bridge educational inequality.

“We believe that inclusive education is key to national development, and this donation is our contribution to ensuring that no student is left behind,” he stated.

He disclosed that the company has so far distributed 145 desktop computers to inclusive institutions nationwide.

Highlighting the challenges faced by persons with disabilities, Mr. Ansah who is visually impaired remarked, “Persons with disability usually face various challenges in Ghana. Negative societal attitudes often worsen their already difficult situation and limit their access to quality education and employment opportunities.”

Drawing from his personal experience as a visually impaired professional, he encouraged the students to remain focused and make the best use of the computers. “Take good care of these devices and let them serve as tools to transform your future,” he advised, adding that, “with determination and hard work, you can rise to become leaders and role models in society.”

The Coordinator of R-CAMAT, Prof. Irene Vanderpuye, expressed appreciation to Ghana Gas, describing the gesture as both timely and impactful.

“This support has come at a crucial time when assistive technology is becoming central to learning. Our students are gradually moving beyond braille to more advanced digital tools, and this donation will significantly enhance that transition,” she said.

She further appealed to other organisations to support inclusive education. “We encourage other public-spirited institutions to emulate this example and invest in the education of persons with disabilities,” she added.

A senior officer at Ghana Gas, Mr. Kwasi Addai Mununkum Otchere, urged the students to justify the investment made in them. “We are ready to support you, but we will be encouraged to do more when we see the positive impact of this donation on your academic work,” he noted.

The President of the Disability Students’ Association at UCC, Mr. Emmanuel Apaabey, expressed gratitude for the continued support from Ghana Gas. “We are very happy and grateful for this kind gesture. Last year, you supported our association during our week celebration, and today you have come again to support our education. We sincerely thank you for thinking of us,” he said.

The officials later toured the facilities at R-CAMAT, where students and staff demonstrated the use of various assistive devices available to support learning.

Present at the ceremony were lecturers, staff and students of the Centre.
