Career Map Orientation and Skill Development Workshop Held for First-Year Marketing Students

The EU-PACT for Skills Project at the University of Cape Coast, in collaboration with the Department of Marketing and Supply Chain Management of the School of Business, organised a one-day Career Map Orientation and Skill Development Workshop for first-year students on Monday, 9th March 2026, at Auditorium 900, University of Cape Coast.

The programme introduced students to the  Career Map of Marketing and Procurement, to help them understand their course structure, career opportunities, and the skills required in marketing, procurement, and supply chain management.

Participants were also guided on essential digital skills needed for academic work and future employment.

The event formed part of activities under the EU–GH Pact for Skills Project at the University of Cape Coast, an initiative led by the Provost of the College of Humanities and Legal Studies, Prof. Daniel Agyapong.

Speaking during the programme, Dr. Alex Boadi Dankyi, Coordinator of the EU–GH Pact for Skills Programme at the University of Cape Coast, explained that the Career Map was designed to help students clearly understand the courses they study, the competencies they must develop, and the professional opportunities available after graduation. He noted that early orientation enables students to plan their academic work properly, make informed decisions, and prepare for the changing demands of the modern, technology-driven job market.

He added that the project also provides additional training opportunities to complement the formal curriculum.

Serving as the resource person, a lecturer at the Department of Human Resource Management, Dr. Dorothy Amfo-Antiri, who is also a key member of the project team, delivered a presentation on the Career Map and explained the academic structure of the programme and expectations at each level of study.

She highlighted the importance of developing analytical, communication, and digital skills, and outlined career opportunities in marketing, procurement, supply chain management, logistics, banking, consulting, and entrepreneurship. She encouraged students to take advantage of digital training opportunities to enhance their employability.

During the interaction session, a student asked how they could adapt to the changing demands of the world of work when the academic curriculum is fixed. Responding, Dr. Daniel Ofori explained that the Career Map initiative was introduced to help anticipate industry trends and guide students accordingly.

He noted that the Department works with its Programme Advisory Committee (PAC), which includes industry professionals, to provide regular feedback to inform curriculum review and training needs.

Adding to the discussion, Dr. Alex Boadi Dankyi indicated that through the project, students have access to the IBM SkillBuild platform, which allows them to take free online courses in digital and professional skills to enhance their employability.

The Head of the Department of Marketing and Supply Chain Management, Prof. Gloria Kakrabah-Quarshie Agyapong, who chaired the programme, encouraged students to take the orientation seriously and make good use of the guidance provided.

Other project team members present included Dr. Daniel Ofori, Dr. Akua Tiwaa Buabeng-Boateng, Dr. Kwame Ofori, and Dr. Osman Light.

The workshop forms part of ongoing activities under the EU–GH Pact for Skills Project, which seeks to strengthen digital skills, career readiness, and employability among students of the University of Cape Coast.
