Ciucc and Ucc Luban Workshop Hold Lantern Festival Cultural Celebration

The Confucius Institute, University of Cape Coast (CIUCC) and the Luban Workshop have celebrated the end of the Chinese New Year (Lantern Festival).

The event, titled “Festival of Blessings”, also marked the festive occasion in the Chinese Year of the Horse.

The event witnessed a variety of traditional activities, including lantern making, lantern riddle guessing, writing the Chinese character “Fu” (福) for good fortune, and tasting Chinese cuisine.

The students took turns to treat the guests to captivating performances.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof Denis Worlanyo Aheto; the Registrar,  Gideon Enoch Abbeyquaye Esq, as well as other University functionaries, joined the new China Director of the Confucius Institute at UCC (CIUCC), Prof. Zang Yonghong, and a large Chinese community to commemorate the day.

As part of the event, Prof Xu Shu, the Vice President of Hunan City University, also delivered an online congratulatory message, while a calligraphy expert joined virtually to introduce Chinese calligraphy and guide participants in practice.

The event received strong support from KEDA (Ghana) Ceramics Company, which assisted with food preparation and logistics.

Speaking at the event, Prof Zang Yonghong noted that while the Confucius Institute serves as a “bridge of culture,” the Luban Workshop acts as a “beam of skills,” highlighting the importance of cultural exchange and practical learning as 2026 marks the China–Africa Year of Cultural and People-to-People Exchange.

She commended UCC for engaging constructively with China’s leadership and charting a new blueprint for enhanced cooperation.

She encouraged the students to study the Chinese language at the institute and experience the profound Chinese culture.

She also pledged to expand exchanges across academia, and civil society to further strengthen cultural understanding, mutual trust, and enduring friendship between the peoples of China and Ghana.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof Denis Aheto, in his remarks, commended the Confucius Institute for the celebration.

He called on students to take the study of the Chinese language seriously in order to reap the numerous benefits.
