The Faculty of Law of University of Cape Coast on Friday, 21st of October, 2016 held its yearly roll call ceremony to usher the first year student into the Faculty. The roll call is a unique ceremony meant to complement the University’s matriculation and where students are charged specifically on the ethics and the demands of the law. Students take an oath to comply with the rules and regulations governing the University and adhere to the dictates and demands as well as, obey rules and regulations as junior members of the Faculty. The underlying rationale of this year’s ceremony was to re-echo the fundamental tenets of the Faculty of Law: which is Intelligence Diligence and Service. The vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Professor Joseph Ghartey-Ampiah in his address to the Faculty, students and invited guests present enumerated the history behind the coming into inception of the faculty and made it clear that the Faculty of Law is now of age. This, he said in relation to the fact that the Faculty has, despite the myriad of difficulties bedeviling it, managed to successfully enroll 50 percent of their first batch to the Ghana Law School. He then charged the students to work in groups and make sure that they should not leave anyone of their cohort behind. The fresh students or the “Adornment Class”, as affectionately called by the Founding Dean of the Law Faculty, were charged to mirror the principles of the Faculty of Law, UCC. To wit, fresh students were implored to think critically and also render service to the community at law. Further, the Dean intimated that in pursuit of academic excellence diligence should be their hall mark. The Founding Dean further highlighted some of the successes of the Faculty, thus far while outlining a myriad of challenges that the faculty has faced since its inception, particularly with respect to workforce and used the opportunity to appeal to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Joseph Ghartey-Ampiah and the Provost of the College of Humanities and Legal Studies, Professor Dora Edu-Buandoh, who was the Chairperson for the occasion to help the Faculty in this regard. Ultimately, the Founding Dean stated categorically that the Faculty of Law has come to stay! The key note Speaker, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, Justice of the Court of Appeal of Ghana stated that though the study of law comes with several challenges, with commitment and dedication by the students, they would definitely become successful in the noble profession that they chosen to be part of. She urged the fresh students and the continuing students to ask themselves which aspects or branches of law they found interesting and appealing to them as they pursue the course and by that, they will find their passion and thereby the fulfillment they seek. She used her experiences as a student of the law and as a practicing lawyer to inspire the students and guests present at the occasion to aspire for excellence. Prof Dora F. Edu-Buandoh, the Chairperson for the occasion also in her submission made reiterated that fact the students should take their studies seriously by emulating the continuing students who were just awarded for excellence. She also emphasized the need for the students to work in groups. The roll call ceremony is also used as a platform to award continuing students who had distinguished themselves in the course of their academic studies. The faculty of law wishes the ‘Adornment’ class the best in their studies.
